Mumbai Indians (MI) received a huge blow as their star pacer Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the rest of Indian Premier League (IPL) matches to focus on his rehabilitation. The five-time champions named English veteran Chris Jordan as a replacement for Archer.

On Tuesday (May 9), MI’s social media handles announced the same. “Chris Jordan will join the MI squad for the rest of the season. Chris replaces Jofra Archer, whose recovery and fitness continue to be monitored by ECB. Jofra will return home to focus on his rehabilitation,” Mumbai Indians’ tweet read.

Archer, who was signed by the Mumbai-based franchise for a whopping INR 8 crore, played just five matches for the team. After nearly two years, Archer made a comeback to competitive cricket by playing for MI. He was struggling with an elbow and back injury.

In the five matches for the MI, Archer scalped just two wickets at an economy of 9.50. Overall, the 28-year-old has donned the IPL jersey in 40 matches, picking up 48 wickets at an economy of 19.69. He missed playing for the franchise last year due to injuries.

The England Cricket Board (ECB) has also released a statement regarding Jofra Archer’s rehabilitation, announcing that the decision was mutual. “Archer has been recovering from right elbow surgery. However, pushing through the discomfort whilst recently playing, hoping it will settle, has proven challenging. Therefore, it has been agreed for him to return to the UK for a period of rest and rehabilitation to give him the best opportunity for a full recovery,” the ECB said in a statement.

On the other hand, Chris Jordan, who went unsold at the auction for the 16th edition of IPL for his base price of INR 2 crore, has played 28 IPL matches and bagged 27 wickets at an economy of 9.32.
