Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are locking horns right now and the latter, after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, posted a defendable 171/9 in their 20 overs on Thursday (May 4) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Kolkata were off to a shaky start as their top three batters had short stays at the crease. Jason Roy could contribute just 20 runs off 19 balls, while Rahmanullah Gubaz was sent to packing for a golden duck.

Then skipper Nitish Rana and the dangerous Rinku Singh, through their slow innings, saved KKR’s innings. Rana took 31 balls to score 42 runs, (with three fours and three sixes) while Rinku Singh racked up a 35-ball 46-run knock with a six and four boundaries. Apart from them, other players simply faltered against SRH bowlers except for Andre Russell (24 off 15) who showed intent but couldn’t stay longer at the crease courtesy of Mayank Markande in the 15th over.

Aiden Markram in the 12th over got rid of Rana off a fullish delivery which the KKR captain tried to slog sweep but the ball traveled up high in the air and Markram, by running backward, grabbed it to complete a brilliant caught and bowled. Rinku’s dismissal came in the last over bowled by T Natarajan. Rinku mistimed a shot off Natarajan’s low full toss and Abdul Samad grabbed a stunning catch.

Among the SRH bowlers, Marco Jansen and T Natarajan bagged two wickets each, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kartik Tyagi, Aiden Markram, and Mayank Markande got one wicket each.

Notably, both teams are struggling this season as they are still languishing last on the points table. KKR are placed eighth with three wins from nine matches, while SRH have won three from their eight matches.
