Sri Lanka storm into the Super 12

Sri Lanka have resurrected brilliantly after their humiliating loss in their tournament opener against Namibia. The Lankan Lions then defeated the UAE in their last Group A match and clinched the victory against the Netherlands on Thursday [October 20] at the GMHBA Geelong.

After winning the toss, Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka opted to bat first, and this decision worked well for them. They put on a decent total of 162/6 in their 20 overs. The bowlers then did the rest of the job of restricting the Dutch side to 146/9 and won the match by 16 runs.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who played a crucial role in the clash against UAE, shone in this match too. He scalped three wickets in his four overs by conceding 28 runs at an economy of 7.00. Hasaranga even bowled two batters- Colin Ackermann and Timm van der Gugten- on golden ducks.

Max O’Dowd’s unbeaten half-century knock had gone in vain. He scored a brilliant 71 runs off 53 balls (with six fours and three sixes) but still failed to take his team to victory. Apart from him, other batters faltered; they couldn’t even reach the 30-run mark.

Maheesh Theekshana gave an early blow to the Dutch by dismissing Vikramjit Singh (seven runs off 14 balls). Theekshana then went on to bowl out Tom Cooper.

Kusal Mendis, who scored a match-winning knock, was adjudged the Player of the Match. “The wicket was a bit slow, so we needed to take some time and I could get the runs after 10 overs. Asalanka started well, he understood the way the wicket played and I could get going with a few boundaries,” Mendis said after the match.

Mendis had scored 79 runs off 44 balls (with five fours and five sixes) at a strike rate of 179.55, while Asalanka scored a slow but crucial knock of 31 runs off 30 balls (with three fours).
