After a series of ordinary scores, India captain Rohit Sharma finally scored his 11th Test century at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot against England on Thursday (February 15). Following two early wickets, Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja took care of the innings through their partnership. Sharma scored 131 runs from 196 calls.

As Sharma reached his ton, he became the oldest Indian captain to score a century in Test cricket (at 36 years and 291 days). Previously, Vijay Hazare used to hold that record since 1951.

It was also Sharma’s third hundred as Test captain. With three Test hundreds as the Indian team’s captain, Sharma also equaled Kapil Dev in the list of Indian captains with the most Test centuries. Virat Kohli stands in the first position with 20 centuries as captain.

The 36-year-old also surpassed MS Dhoni‘s tally of 78 sixes in Test cricket by becoming the second most six hitters in red-ball cricket as an Indian. Virender Sehwag with 91 sixes stands first on the list.

Netizens praise Rohit Sharma for his gritty hundred

Rohit Sharma was at the receiving end due to his low scores in the first two Tests as he made 24, 39, 14, and 13. Fans questioned his place in the team as well, but Sharma, with this century, shut down the critics, at least for a while.

India won the toss and opted to bat first. After Yashasvi Jaiswal lost his wicket to Mark Wood, Shubman Gill departed for a nine-ball duck, and Rajat Patidar’s 15-ball five runs, the pair of Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja took India to a commanding position, with Jadeja too scoring his Test ton.
