Venue revealed! New York set to HOST India vs Pakistan for 2024 T20 World Cup

The much awaited 2024 ICC T20 World Cup has not announced the groups each team will play in, but it looks like a fixture and its venue has already been picked. As per several reports, the match between India and Pakistan will be played in New York, United States of America. 

Many reports suggest that India and Pakistan will be playing a match against each other, despite the groups still not being announced. The match will be played in the Eisenhower Park, a multi-sport venue in Long Island, New York. The venue doesn’t have a stadium yet, but there has been an approved plan for a modular stadium to be built there. The capacity will be 34,000 people and will be dismantled after the end of the World Cup.

The US will have 3 venues, with them being in Fort Lauderdale in Florida, Dallas in Texas  and New York. The stadium in Dallas, called the Grand Prairie Stadium, is a former baseball stadium which will be converted into a cricket one. Fort Lauderdale’s Central Broward Park has hosted many T20Is in the past. 

History of cricket in the United States of America

Cricket was brought to the United States by immigrants from the United Kingdom. During the American Revolution, it was a very popular game, with the troops playing it regularly. Even George Washington was once recorded playing “a game of wicket”.

The nation hosted Canada for the first ever international 3-day match. The match was played in Manhattan, an area in New York, and Canada won by 23 runs. The game saw a dip in popularity with the rise of baseball and American football, variants of cricket and rugby. 

In the past few years there has been a rise in popularity of cricket, with the team participating in various ICC tournaments like the ICC Trophy and ICC Americas Championship. The rise of immigrants from South Asian countries also helped in making the game more popular. 

The US also have their own franchise T20 league, called Major League Cricket. With the country now qualifying for the T20 World Cup, they will finally participate in their first T20I World Cup.
