Nitin Menon, who is the only Indian in the ICC’s Elite Panel of Umpires, recently made a sensational claim ahead of his umpiring debut at the 2023 Ashes series. Without revealing anyone’s name, he said how some star players in the Indian cricket team put pressure on the umpires to get those 50-50 decisions in their favor.

Several times in the past, he was criticized for his umpiring decisions especially when Virat Kohli was playing. Menon claimed umpiring in a pressure-cooked environment has helped him grow as an umpire, also stating that it’s much easier to do umpiring outside India.

When India play in India there is a lot of hype, a lot of big stars in the Indian team they always try to create pressure on you, they always try to get those 50-50 decisions in favor of them but if we are in control of ourselves under pressure, then we don’t focus on what they are trying to do,” Menon told PTI.

There have been several instances where Nitin Menon had to face the wrath of the fans due to his decisions against Virat Kohli. The latest was the 2023 Border Gavaskar Trophy series.

After Kohli ended his Test draught in the first innings of the fourth Test, he could be seen taking a sly dig at Menon when Australia were batting. This happened on Day 5 when Ravichandran Ashwin convinced skipper Rohit Sharma to take the review to dismiss Travis Head.

As India failed to overturn the on-field umpire’s decision, Kohli, hilariously called out Menon saying if he was batting, he would have already given out. “Main hota to out tha (Would have been out if I was the batter),” Kohli could be heard saying in a video.

Nitin Menon was all smiles after hearing Kohli’s remark and even responded to the former India skipper by raising his finger. The video of the incident had gone viral because earlier in the BGT series, Menon was slammed for being ‘biased’ towards Kohli.
