The high-voltage rescheduled fifth Test match between India and England saw some nasty racist comments thrown at some Indian fans by a group of English spectators at Edgbaston at Birmingham that changed the mood of the game. England and Wales Cricket Board and Warwickshire will ban those spectators if they are found guilty of racism and other such things.

England’s Test captain Ben Stokes took to Twitter and expressed his disappointment over the incident and said that there is no place for it in the game.

“Amazing week on the pitch but really disappointed to hear reports of racist abuse at Edgbaston. Absolutely no place for it in the game. Hope all the fans at the white-ball series have a brilliant time and create a party atmosphere. That’s what cricket’s about!!”

Racism incident at Edgbaston

A section of Indian dans were racially abused towards the end of Day 4. An investigation is underway following the incident. The allegations were highlighted by Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq. He shared threads of the posts on his Twitter account. Last year, he had taken his complains in front of the parliamentary select committe about institutional racism at Yorkshire which resulted in ECB charges and ultimately major changes.

Chief Executive Stuart Cain said, “Nearly 100,000 people watched one of the most exiting Test matches in recent history earlier this week. But we cannot hide from the mindless racist abuse experienced by some fans following India in the Eric Hollies Stand. These unacceptable actions by a small number of people have over-shadowed a superb sporting contest, and those responsible do not deserve to be part of the cricket family.”
