Not Virat Kohli! Harmanpreet Kaur is the only cricketer who featured in TIME’s Emerging Leaders list

Indian Women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has earned a spot on TIME magazine’s ‘2023 TIME100 Next: the Emerging Leaders Shaping the World’ list. She is one of the three Indians and the only cricketer who featured in the list. The list was released on Wednesday (September 14).
As per the magazine, Harmanpreet’s “fire and flair have been instrumental in transforming women’s cricket from fringe curiosity to one of the world’s most valuable assets.” The magazine also wrote that Harmanpreet secured legendary status in 2017 after her breathtaking innings of 171 runs from just 115 balls in a World Cup match against Australia.
The magazine also highlighted the recent controversy in Bangladesh. Harmanpreet criticized umpires for their decisions due to which she was slapped with four demerit points and two-match bans by the International Cricket Council (ICC). Apart from publicly criticizing the umpires, she also smashed after stumps when given out by the umpire. She also allegedly told the Bangladeshi players to invite the umpire the click the photo with the team.
Another thing about her that made headlines was during the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Harmanpreet led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to the title by beating Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals in the final.
Harmanpreet Kaur may not play in the 2023 Asian Games
After ICC’s punishment, Harmanpreet Kaur is set to miss two matches of the upcoming Asian Games. However, she will be only able to play in the tournament if her team reaches the final. The Asian Games will start on September 23, in Hangzhou.
Due to the ICC T20I rankings on June 1, four teams (both men’s and women’s) will be playing from the last eight stages. Because of this, Harmanpreet won’t have the chance to feature in the quarterfinal and the semi-final. If India fail to reach the final, then the 34-year-old will not have the chance to play in the 2023 Asian Games.
