The ODI World Cup is around the corner and opinions plus predictions from the cricket fraternity have started. Former India opener Virender Sehwag joined the bandwagon and made an interesting statement regarding who he thinks will be the highest run-scorer in the prestigious tournament. According to Sehwag, it’s India captain Rohit Sharma who will be more energetic throughout the tournament and will be the highest run scorer.
It came as a surprise because Rohit is not enjoying consistency. Though once or twice he ends up playing a brilliant knock, this year, his form fumbled a lot. But despite that, Sehwag, while speaking to ICC, picked Rohit, thinking that on good World Cup wickets, openers will have good opportunities.
“If I want to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma. There are a couple of names, but I am Indian and I should pick an Indian, so Rohit Sharma,” Sehwag said. “When the World Cup comes, his energy level, his performance goes up. So, I am sure [he will do well],” he added.
Rohit Sharma was the highest run-scorer in the 2019 World Cup
The India captain Rohit Sharma was the highest run-scorer in the 2019 ODI World Cup played in England. In nine matches, he amassed 648 runs, including five centuries and one half-century, at an excellent average of 81 and a strike rate of 98.33. His highest score was a 140-run knock.
His performance took India to the semi-final but India suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand. New Zealand then lost the match to England.
Meanwhile, the ODI World Cup in India will start in October with a match between last year’s finalists in Ahmedabad. India will play their first match against Australia in Chennai.
