On this day in 2015, South African legend AB de Villiers scripted history by slamming the fastest century in ODIs off just 31 balls. It came in the second ODI against West Indies at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. His astounding performance drove his team to 439/2.

The Proteas star surpassed New Zealand’s Corey Anderson who had scored a ton from 36 balls in 2014. When De Villiers entered at No.3, South Africa were in a terrific position. Mr. 360 registered his half-century from just 16 deliveries in a flash and then raced to his hundred from another 15 balls. This powerful knock was decorated with nine boundaries and 16 maximums at a flabbergasting strike rate of 338.64.

But he couldn’t reach the 150-run mark when Andre Russell’s delivery trapped him at deep extra cover. He then departed after scoring 149 runs from 44 balls.

Prior to de Villiers, Proteas openers Hashim Amla and Rilee Rossouw gave a fiery start to the innings with their respective centuries. They stitched a 247-run opening stand between them. Jerome Taylor trapped Rossouw who added 128 from 115, while Amla remained unbeaten (153* from 142 balls).

It was impossible for the West Indies to chase down this target. However, with a 64-run knock from Dwyane Smith, Denesh Ramdin’s 57, Marlon Samuels’ 40, and Jonathan Carter’s 40, the Caribbeans avoided an embarrassing defeat as they could score 291/7 and lost the match by 148 runs.

Ab de Villiers retired from international cricket on May 2018 but continued to play in franchise leagues. But on Friday, November 19 in 2021, to the shock of the fans, de Villiers bid adieu to all forms of cricket, including the Indian Premier League. He even declined the offer to play in the Legends League.

De Villiers donned the national jersey in 2004 and represented his national side in 114 Tests, 228 ODIs, and 78 T20Is. He has amassed 20014 runs across all forms of cricket and accumulated 5162 runs in 184 IPL matches.
