When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed KL Rahul as India’s vice-captain, it did indicate that it won’t give another chance to the out-of-form batter. A couple of days before the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the young Shubman Gill was seen practicing in the nets with captain Rohit Sharma, which made the fans angry, and at the same time, they heaved a sigh of relief in the hope of finally seeing a change in the XI.
Fans got angry because they were still thinking that the management will go with Rahul again to give him another opportunity. And as Rohit Sharma, during the toss revealed the playing XI, fans became happy to see Gill’s inclusion in the squad as an opener alongside Rohit Sharma on Wednesday (March 1).
In his last seven innings, Rahul scored 22, 23, 10, 2, 29, 17, and 1. In the present series, Rahul was named the vice-captain for the first two Tests, but he scored just 38 runs in three innings. Rahul last scored a Test half-century on January 2022 against South Africa in Johannesburg, while his last century came against the same team in December 2021.
After the Delhi Test, a BCCI official said as quoted by the Indian Express: “It was decided not to name any vice-captain. Instead, the power was given to Rohit Sharma. Who will lead the side in case he has to leave the field in Rohit Sharma’s call.” And Rohit and management have finally made the call, which brought in only happy reactions from Twitteratis.

The Punjab-born Shubman Gill has been scoring runs brilliantly this year. He recently became the fifth Indian batter to smash a double century in the ODIs, becoming the youngest cricketer to do so.
Gill made his debut against Australia in the 2020-2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Melbourne. In 25 Test innings, the 23-year-old has amassed 736 runs, including a century (110) and four half-centuries.
Apart from this change, India have also rested Mohammed Shami and included Umesh Yadav. Australia, meanwhile, have made two changes. Cameron Green made a comeback and replaced David Warner, while veteran paceman Mitchell Starc replaced Pat Cummins. India have won the toss and decided to bat at the Holkar Stadium.
