Pakistan were mauled by India by a mammoth 228 runs during the Super Four match on Monday (September 11) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After India’s 356/2, Pakistan saw their wickets fall like a pack of cards before they eventually got bundled out for a mere 128 runs in 32 overs.
However, Pakistan head coach Grant Bradburn thinks this humiliating defeat is a blessing in disguise for Pakistan. Bradburn pointed out that as Pakistan kept on winning matches in the recent past, a fresh defeat against one of the best teams is a timely reminder that they have to turn up for every match.
“My gut feeling is that we are grateful for the gift that has been this last two days,” Bradburn told reporters after the defeat. “We don’t get to play some of the best players in the world very often,” he added.
Pakistan, just before the Asia Cup reached the top position of the ODI rankings. They started their Asia Cup campaign in a dominating way. First, a thumping victory over Nepal, followed by humbling India’s top order in a washed-away match. And after registering an easy seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh, they received the shock of a 228-run loss to India.
Grant Bradburn accepts Pakistan did not play good cricket
After winning the toss on Sunday, India skipper Rohit Sharma chose to bat first. He and Shubman Gill scored their respective half-centuries.
Virat Kohli and KL Rahul batted after that and after rain interruption and the continuation of the match on Monday, Pakistani bowlers looked lackluster in front of the two batters. Both Kohli and Rahul scored their centuries, giving no room for Pakistan to get an upper hand over them.
And while chasing, Babar Azam and Co. fell in front of Kuldeep Yadav who sent give batters to packing. Coach Grant Bradburn accepted that Pakistan did not play good cricket in the two days while facing India.
“We lost at all facets of the game,” Bradburn said. “No excuses, we weren’t good enough in the last two days.”
