In 2018, rising star Prithvi Shaw captained India to victory in the U-19 Men’s ODI World Cup. He had scored 261 runs in 6 games, averaging 65.25 while striking at 94. He was set to be the next big thing for India and was called “A mix of Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag” by then India head coach, Ravi Shastri.
But five years later, 23-year-old Shaw hasn’t played a single game for India in over two years, is dropped by his IPL franchise due to his poor form during the competition, and barely gets selected for the Indian squad. 2023 hasn’t been kind to him off the field as well.
Social Media Influencer Sapna Gill claimed that Shaw had molested her in a nightclub but Mumbai Police already declared her allegations false. On the night she claimed Shaw molested her, she had goons attack him because he refused to take a selfie with her.
Shaw’s career started off with a bang. He made his List A Debut in 2017 at the age of 17. Later he became the youngest centurion in the Duleep Trophy, a record originally held by Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar. Shaw was then named as the captain of the U-19 India team, bought for Rs. 1.8 Crore by the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in the IPL Auction and made his Test debut in October 2018 against West Indies. He scored 134 on his debut and in the next game scored 70 off 53 balls.
But after that, he was suspended by the BCCI for doping in July 2019 for 8 months. He tested positive for Terbutaline. Shaw claimed that he didn’t mean to dope and accidentally ingested the substance after having a cough syrup. Since then, he has only played 3 tests, 6 ODIs and 1 T20.

Prithvi Shaw claims he was not told the reason why he was dropped
In a recent interview, he said “When I was dropped from Team India, I didn’t get to know the reason. Someone told me it could be fitness, I cleared tests at the NCA, again scored runs, but didn’t get a chance in WI. I’m disappointed, but you just have to move on“. He further said that he was working hard for a comeback, and hopes to play 12-14 years for the Indian team. His goal ultimately is to win the World Cup for India.
After great performances in the domestic circuit for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shaw captained the Mumbai side to victory in the 2020-21 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He finished the tournament as the highest run scorer with 827 runs, along with a double century against Pondicherry.
Prithvi Shaw currently is in England, where he’s playing for Northamptonshire in the Royal London ODI Cup. In his first game, he was dismissed in a rather bizarre way, in which he fell and got out hit wicket after a bouncer. But just in a few days, he scored his 2nd List A double century, scoring 244 off 153 balls, in which he hit 28 fours and 11 sixes. With plenty of consistent performances like these, Shaw aims to make his comeback soon and hopes to achieve his goal of winning the World Cup for India.
