Punjab Kings quash all remours regarding sacking Mayank Agarwal as captain
Mayank Agarwal
The Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings have put an end to all the rumours pertaining to their sacking of Mayank Agarwal’s captaincy on Wednesday, August 24.
A couple of days ago, a report on InsideSport website reported that England’s Jonny Bairstow could become PBKS in IPL 2023 season. In that report, a PBKS official told the website, “No Mayank is not in plans to lead. He will need to focus on batting. He will be a crucial player for us. As for Anil, we are discussing a few options but nothing has materialized yet. We have time left. We will take a call at the right time.” They claimed this after PBKS decided to part ways with Anil Kumble as their head coach to approach former England captain Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss.
Then PBKS’ official Twitter handle issued a statement that quashed all the rumours. They tweeted that no official has claimed about removing Agarwal as the captain.
“News reports published by a certain News website pertaining to captaincy of the Pujnab Kings franchise has been making the rounds in the last few days. We would like to state that no official of the team has issued any statement on the same,” tweeted PBKS.

Mayank Agarwal was made captain after KL Rahul left Punjab Kings in IPL 2022
After KL Rahul left PBKS in IPL 2022, Lucknow Super Giants signed him as their captain whereas Agarwal was given the captaincy of PBKS. Agarwal had a forgetful season as he usually opens the innings but in that season, he batted lower and it did no good to him. He could only score 196 runs in 13 games at an average of 16.33 and a strike rate of 122.50.
Under his leadership, PBKS missed the playoffs and finished sixth on the points table despite an attacking batting line-up. Agarwal is now currently representing the Bengaluru Blasters in Maharaja KSCA T20 League and has scored 480 runs that also included two centuries in 11 innings at an average of 53.33 and strike rate of 167.24.
