Zimbabwe defeated Ireland by 31 runs in the fourth match of the Group Stage on Monday, October 17 at the Blundstone Arena in Hobart. Zimbabwe batter Sikandar Raza was the star of the match with his 82-run knock.

Raza‘s knock guided his team to a challenging total of 174/7 in their allotted 20 overs. During Ireland’s chase, no batter could reach even the 30-run mark. Curtis Campher was the high-scorer with his 27 runs off 22 balls. But in the 13th over, Sean Williams bowled full one around the middle. Campher went across the line to sweep but failed to connect the ball and it ended up disturbing the stumps.

George Dockrell and Gareth Delany scored 24 runs each. Barry McCarthy played an unbeaten knock of 22 runs off 16 balls with a four and a six but that didn’t help the Irish players and they eventually had no balls left to score runs. They scored 143 runs by losing nine wickets in their 20 overs.

Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani scalped three wickets, while Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava picked up two wickets each. Raza and Williams grabbed one wicket each. Raza was named Player of the Match for his all-round show.

There is no secret to be honest. The only secret I can tell you is to try to channel all the emotions of success and failure into the right way and try to complete with the best in the world so we can represent Zimbabweans and put our flag among the best in the world. We wanted to say one thing: when we qualified, as much as we were happy to be here, we knew that our journey is not done,” Raza said during the post match presentation.

During the post-match presentation, Zimbabwe skipper Craig Ervine said: “We’re ecstatic. To put in a performance like that in the first game back in the World Cup, we showed we belong and it’s a pity that it has been so long since we last played in a World Cup.”
