Team India's WTC final loss and exclusion from that final playing XI is still afresh in R Ashwin's mind.

India’s WTC Final playing XI was under scrutiny due to the non-selection of the experienced spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. India went on to lose the final to Australia by 209 runs, suffering a humiliating defeat and strengthening the criticism around Ashwin’s exclusion. Post that, the spinner opened up about his thoughts on the exclusion in a critical interview where he also spoke about how it affected his mental health.
Almost a fortnight after Team India’s WTC final loss, R Ashwin spoke about the lack of sense of security in the current Indian team on his YouTube channel and compared it to the time under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
Despite being the number 1 spinner in the world there was no place for Ashwin in India’s playing XI. This move from Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid was baffling to many. While India’s captain brushed the talk around Ashwin’s exclusion under the carpet saying it was unfortunate, Ahswin has not forgotten how unfairly he was treated.
R Ashwin highlights lack of ‘sense of security’ under Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid
R Ashwin uploaded a video on his YouTube channel where he spoke about the WTC Final and the kind of social media reactions team India received after they lost the final. A lot of the reactions were about how India won 3 ICC trophies under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
Elaborating on that Ashwin said, “Lot of us talk about MS Dhoni’s leadership. What did he do? He kept it very simple. Under his regime, where I also played, he will pick a squad of 15. The same squad of 15 and the XI will play throughout the year. That sense of security is very important for a player.”
Ashwin explained why the team was successful in those days and what’s making the difference now. He said that the quality of a player doesn’t change overnight and that’s why consistency is important.
Along the same lines, a few days ago R Ashwin had expressed his unhappiness about being labeled as an overthinker and had explained that overthinking comes only when there is no security about his place in the team. It is disheartening to hear that world’s current best spinner finds it hard to seal a spot in the team for a match as important as the WTC Final.
