The 2023 ODI World Cup is just a couple of months away but there is no excitement for the quadrennial showpiece event, feel the fans. However, R Ashwin disagrees with this narrative as the Indian off-spinner asked a user to have some patience, at least till the Asia Cup. Ashwin also remembered his childhood days and how he used to carry the WC schedule to his school.
The 2023 ODI World Cup is set to kick off on 5 October with defending champions England taking on New Zealand. However, the schedule fiasco and delayed announcement about ticket sales has irked fans to the core. Not only they are not excited but fans are also slamming the host board, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for poor management.
An Australian journalist even called the Indian cricket board the “most incompetent board”. Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) after assurance from BCCI, released the revised schedule a few days back. As many as nine games have been rescheduled. This led to further criticism.

Fan claims excitement is limited to social media, R Ashwin reacts

Amid all the talks, an X user claimed that the excitement and vibe for the 2023 ODI World Cup is limited to social media. “Maybe it’s just me, but the vibe of the upcoming Cricket WC I feel exists only on Social Media. Back in 2016 & 2011, it was much different. The excitement and vibe was palpable,” shared the user on X.
This post went viral and reached R Ashwin who was quick to share his views. The India off-spinner who was a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning squad said that fans should wait till the Asia Cup kicks off for the excitement to kick in.
“It’s a bit too early and I am sure it will kick in once the Asia cup begins. The World Cup fixtures used to come out in small calendar type prints and I used to take it to school to discuss India’s games. ( 96 , 99, and 03 WC ). Happening on Social media now and that’s a good thing cos more people can get involved,” replied Ashwin.
The Asia Cup kicks off on 30 August. Six teams including India and Pakistan will take part in what is touted to be a dress rehearsal for the World Cup.
