Rajasthan Royals (RR) spinner R Ashwin said he was left surprised at one of the decisions made by the on-field umpires during his team’s match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday. As RR defeated CSK by three runs in a thrilling content, Ashwin was named the Player of the Match for his all-round performance.

The veteran cricketer scored a valuable 30 with the bat and picked two wickets at the expense of just 25 runs in his four overs. Ashwin was then sent to address the media at the post-match press conference and it was there the RR spinner made this comment.

When Ashwin was asked about the umpire’s decision to change the ball midway through the second innings, the RR spinner said that he himself could not comprehend the decision. Ashwin said that it was unusual to see a ball being changed due to the dew factor.

“I’m quite surprised the umpires changed the ball for dew on their own. It’s never happened before and I’m quite surprised. Some of the decisions in this year’s IPL on the field have left me a little flummoxed, to be honest,” said Ashwin.

“I mean, it’s just the middle – left me flummoxed in a good or a bad way. It’s because I think what you need is a little bit of balance,” the veteran spinner added.

“As a bowling team, we are not asking for the ball to be changed. But the ball was changed on the umpire’s accord. I did ask the umpire and he said we can change it. So I just hope every time there is dew they can change it every single time going forward in this IPL. You can do whatever you want, but you just need to be in a standard going forward,” Ashwin stated further.

The 36-year-old also talked about his bowling, at length. Ashwin said that he is pretty happy with the way he is bowling these days and also claimed that he is in a much better space in terms of how he wants to play.

“I feel the ball is coming out really well. I am able to give it a drop, put in more reps, and use my both variations, the length, arm ball, and everything. I am really happy with my bowling at the moment,” said the veteran spinner.
