The owners of Rajasthan Royals, Royals Sports Group, have launched a takeover bid for Yorkshire Cricket County Club. The bid is reported to be 25 million pounds, and this move can see Yorkshire’s 160 years history as a members only club be over.
Despite being the most successful county team of all time, Yorkshire County Cricket Club are currently in debt, with them apparently owing 15 Million to a family trust of a former chairman. They were also thinking of selling their home stadium, Headingley Cricket Ground, to former Newcastle owner, Mike Ashley.
Yorkshire has been hit with a huge racism scandal, after spinner Azeem Rafiq revealed that there was racist abuse by players and staff of the club. Since then, there’s been a lot of fallout in the club. Due to the racism, the English and Wales Cricket Board had suspended Yorkshire from hosting international matches. Many politicians such as the Prime Minister then Boris Johnson, Sajid Javid, etc called out the club and many were fired as well.
Yorkshire CCC could be Rajasthan Royal’s 3rd takeover
Royals Sport Group have major stakes in 2 other teams, them being Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League and Paarl Royals, in the SA20. If they purchase Yorkshire, they could own the prestigious club and an international stadium as well.
If they purchase the club, they could also enter England’s The Hundred competition. Yorkshire has a major stake in the Northern Superchargers, who play their matches in the Headingley Cricket Ground. With them getting an easy entry into The Hundred, Royals Sport Group could have their 4th franchise as well.
In the 2023 IPL, Rajasthan Royals missed out on the 2023 Play-offs despite being runner ups in the 2022 IPL. Paarl Royals finished 4th in the inaugural SA20 and Barbados Royals are currently competing in the CPL.
