New Zealand’s one of the best batter Ross Taylor has retired in April but he has been in the news for revealing the ugly side of cricket in his book Black and While. Recently, he had called out some cricketers for their unintentional racist comments to him and other players during his playing days.

Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals had purchsed him in 2011. However, he scored only 181 runs in 12 matches before being released from the franchise. In his book, he revealed an incident that happened to him during his stint with the Royals. He said that RR owner had slapped him three to four times for getting out on duck.

“The chase was 195, I was lbw for a duck and we didn’t get close,” Taylor wrote in his book, an excerpt of which was published on Stuff.co.nz. “Afterwards, the team, support staff and management were in the bar on the top floor of the hotel. Liz Hurley was there with Warnie [Shane Warne]. One of the Royals owners said to me, ‘Ross, we didn’t pay you a million dollars to get a duck,’ and slapped me across the face three or four times.”

He further stated that the slaps weren’t hard ones but he was surprised to see such thing happening in professional sporting environments.

“He was laughing and they weren’t hard slaps but I’m not sure that it was entirely play-acting. Under the circumstances I wasn’t going to make an issue of it, but I couldn’t imagine it happening in many professional sporting environments.”

The Royals franchise have not responded yet to this statement.

Ross Taylor then spoke of how he wanted to play for the Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise.

“While it was amazing to go for a million dollars, in the long run I would’ve been better off if RCB had got me for US$950,000,” Taylor wrote. “If they had, it would have been my fourth year with them. While the IPL is pretty unsentimental, there is loyalty towards long-serving players and I probably would have had a longer IPL career as a one-franchise player. On the other hand, if I’d stayed at RCB, I wouldn’t have played with greats such as Virender Sehwag, Shane Warne, Mahela Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh.”

Then he explained that when a lot of money is paid on someone, that player deperately wants to prove that it’s worth it. According to him ,if he had a lean patch while playing for RCB for a long time, the management would have faith in him because of what he had done in the past but this isn’t the case when the players go to a new team.
