In a much-anticipated return to ODI action, Team India is preparing for the upcoming Asia Cup, which begins on September 2 with an exciting matchup against bitter rivals Pakistan. Yet, despite the evident enthusiasm, there are still worries regarding the health of a star batsman KL Rahu, who has endured persistent injury setbacks.
The 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) hamstring injury sidelined KL Rahul, whose vitality and function as a wicketkeeper-batsman have been crucial to India. His participation in the Asia Cup is uncertain, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cautiously evaluates his fitness, despite the fact that videos of his recent net sessions have sparked anticipation for his recuperation.
Iyer, who is equally essential to India’s batting order, has been sidelined since March due to injury. The absence of the pair raises pertinent concerns regarding their reintegration into the high-stakes tournament. Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri emphasizes that a player’s return alone may not guarantee a place in the starting XI. Instead, players will be selected based on their present form and match fitness, especially in a competition as crucial as the Asia Cup.

Ravi Shastri says fans are asking too much of KL Rahul
“See when when you’re talking of a player (KL Rahul) who’s not played and is recovering from injury. To think of him in the XI of the Asia Cup, you’re asking a little too much of the player himself. And then you’re talking keeping. When a guy comes from an injury, the range of movement and things of that sort, so that’s a no-no,” Shastri said.
While Ishan Kishan’s impressive performances in Rahul’s absence serves as a capable replacement, India still awaits the BCCI’s decision on Rahul and Iyer’s participation, hoping to see their top batsmen return to action at full strength.
