Former India Head Coach Ravi Shastri drew an interesting comparison between current captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson. Shastri, while supporting Samson’s inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the West Indies tour, said that the Kerala cricketer is yet to realize his potential and he (Shastri) will be disappointed if Samson fails to finish his career on a high.
Shastri cited Rohit Sharma’s example and said he would feel the same way for Samson as he would have felt for Sharma if the star batter had never opened the batting in Test cricket.
“There is Sanju (Samson), who I believe is yet to realise his potential,” Shastri said while talking to The Week.
“He is a match-winner. There is something that is missing. I will be disappointed if he does not finish his career all guns blazing. It is like when I was the coach, I would have been disappointed if Rohit Sharma had not played in my side as a regular Test player. Hence, his opening the batting. I feel similar with Sanju.”

Ravi Shastri wants BCCI to select 15-20 players for ODI World Cup
The former Head Coach also shared his opinions on what India’s ODI World Cup squad should look like. Ravi Shastri feels that the selectors should look to select a pool of 15-20 players as there have been so many injuries to Indian players in the recent past.
“You have a lot of injuries these days. I always like a pool of 15-20. You should always be prepared, you should have a plan B, plan C,” said Shastri.
Talking of injuries, Shastri also warned against rushing Jasprit Bumrah’s comeback. The former India cricketer said that rushing Bumrah might end up like the Shaheen Afridi saga where the Pakistan pacer had to miss several months of cricket due to aggravating his injury.
“He (Bumrah) is a very important cricketer. But if you rush him for the World Cup then you might lose him for four months later on, much like Shaheen Afridi. So there’s a thin line and it needs to be thought about.”
