1983 world cup winner Ravi Shastri recently spoke about how he as India’s head coach always kept his players ready to perform on the big stage and also named a few players who could receive world cup call-ups and be possible threats to players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill.

India’s wait for an ICC trophy began in 2014, after the 2013 Champions Trophy Final, and continues to date. They have a chance to redeem themselves later this year in the ODI World Cup at home. Ravi Shastri believes there are some players who could threaten the big guns of the current Indian team for a spot in the world cup.

Firstly while talking about whether he thinks Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are a permanent opening pair for India in the World Cup this year, Ravi Shastri made a major statement. He said, “No, that is going to be a challenge. You will have to see closer to the event. Form again becomes important” indicating that they could very well be replaced according to the situation.

While naming a few players who could make it to India’s ODI World Cup squad, Shastri said, “There is Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Nehal Wadhera. There is Sudarshan, who played so well in the final. There is Jitesh Sharma.”

Ravi Shastri believes a match-winner like Sanju Samson is yet to realize his potential. Talking about him, the former Indian all-rounder said, “I will be disappointed if he does not finish his career all guns blazing. It is like when I was the coach, I would have been disappointed if Rohit Sharma had not played in my side as a regular Test player. Hence, he’s opening the batting. I feel similar with Sanju.”

While Ravi Shastri believes that these talented youngsters can make it to the World Cup squad for India, only time will tell if BCCI is willing to take that step in order to finally get its hands on another ICC trophy.
