Tilak Varma undoubtedly impressed the Indian cricket fraternity with his brilliant innings in the West Indies T20I series. At a time when other Indian batters found it hard to contribute to the scoreboard, Varma fought like a lone warrior and even slammed his maiden fifty in his debut international series.
As soon as a player starts to perform consistently, suddenly there were suggestions from many people that the player should be included in important tournaments. After his performance in the series, as expected fans started demanding his inclusion in the squad for the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India. Varma has played a total of just three games and that too in the shortest format.
But veteran India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin says the 20-year-old can be an X-factor for India in the 50-over World Cup. Ashwin asserted that the reason why Varma would fit in the squad is due to India’s search for left-handers and its persistent middle-order woes.
Ashwin pointed out that the other top teams do not have world-class spinners to challenge the rookie left-hander. The 36-year-old also understands that grooming Varma quickly for the World Cup is also a difficult task.
Will Tilak Varma feature in the ODI World Cup squad? Rohit Sharma answers the burning question
India captain Rohit Sharma was recently asked whether Varma could get a chance to feature in the prestigious tournament. Rohit gave no straight answer and instead praised the raw talent for his maturity and understanding of his batting. Varma played under Rohit for two years for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
“That is all I will say about him. I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games he has played for India,” Rohit told reporters at an event.
