Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s renowned off-spinner, has reaffirmed his support for the controversial ‘Mankading‘ ban in cricket. He defended this method of dismissal on X (formerly known as Twitter), emphasizing its legality under the rules of the sport. Ashwin argued that it is the non-fielder’s responsibility to stay in the crease until the bowler delivers the ball.
Ravichandran Ashwin took this position due to concerns that a crucial run out of prominent players like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma in the semi-finals of the World Cup could significantly affect the fortunes of the team. Before attempting to leave the crease, batsmen should watch the bowler load the ball and turn his shoulder, as suggested by Ashwin. If they don’t and they run out, it’s a testament to the skill of the bowler that they run out.
Ashwin’s remarks echo an incident from the 2019 IPL in which he manhandled Jos Buttler, which sparked heated debate. Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) resolved the matter by clarifying their rules and making the necessary adjustments.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has also recognized Mankading as a valid dismissal and will not penalize bowlers who perform it. Ashwin’s defense underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the practice in cricket and highlights the need for players and fans to have a common understanding of the issue. He shared a lengthy post on X and ended up with: “Stay inside the crease and live in peace“.
