Ravichandran Ashwin scripts another massive record during 3rd Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Ashwin also replaced England great James Anderson to become the new World No. 1 bowler in the ICC Test rankings.
Ravichandran Ashwin
India’s veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is not slowing down. On home soil, he is a demolisher. Owing to his lethal bowling attacks, alongside Ravindra Jadeja, he ran riot during the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. And during the third one at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Thursday (March 2), he surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev.
The 36-year-old went past Dev to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker for India across all formats. He achieved this milestone after dismissing Alex Carry in his 269th international match for India. He first removed Peter Handscomb, then got rid of Carey, and finished with three wickets after dismissing Nathan Lyon later. Ashwin has now a total of 689 scalps to his name.
Dev had 687 wickets to his name, while the second on the list is Harbhajan Singh with 707 scalps. Anil Kumble still sits on top with 953 wickets.
Ravichandran Ashwin leaps to the no.1 spot in the Test bowling rankings
Ashwin replaced England great James Anderson to become the new World No. 1 bowler in the ICC Test rankings. He leaped to the top as a result of the six wickets he bagged during the Delhi Test. A couple of days ago, the 40-year-old Anderson replaced Australia’s Pat Cummings from the top position courtesy of his brilliant spells against New Zealand.
The star off-spinner from Chennai, Ashwin, has picked a total of 16 wickets in the ongoing Test series. Apart from him, Ravindra Jadeja, who stands atop the all-rounder’s rankings, became the only second Indian (after Kapil Dev) to complete 5000 international runs with 500 wickets during the first Day.
Talking about the third Test, Ashwin went wicketless on Day 1. But after his three wickets on the second day, combined with Umesh Yadav’s three scalps, Australia saw just 11 runs scored for six wickets and collapsed to 197 despite a good start.
Only Cheteshwar Pujara emerged as India’s savior when spinner Nathan Lyon was busy sending the batters one after the other to the pavilion. Lyon finished with eight wickets, while Mitchell Starc and Matthew Kuhnemann (who completed his maiden five-wicket haul yesterday) scalped one each.
Pujara scored 59 with five boundaries and a six, while Shreyas Iyer scored the second-highest run with his quick 26 off 27 balls (with three fours and two sixes). All Australia will now have to chase is a paltry target of 76. To win this match, India will have to execute something extraordinary.
