On 15th February, Sarfaraz Khan finally made his Test debut. On the first day itself, he came in to bat at number six and scored a fifty in 48 balls. It was the 3rd fastest Test fifty on debut, behind Yuvraj of Patiala in 1934 and Hardik Pandya in 2017.
Unfortunately Khan got run out by Ravindra Jadeja when he was at 62. The all-rounder was at 99* and directed the ball to mid-on, calling for a run. The debutant went for the run, but Jadeja changed his mind. It was too late as Khan ran back, but couldn’t reach the crease as Mark Wood ran him out.
Jadeja was criticized by fans online for running out the debutant. Rohit Sharma was also angry, taking off his cap and throwing it on the ground. On the next ball Jadeja completed his century, doing his iconic sword celebration, but not in the same spirit as his previous ones.
Hours after the end of day’s play, Jadeja publicly apologized on Instagram for the mishap, admitting his mistake. He also praised the young Khan for his great innings fifty.

Sarfaraz Khan after stumps talked about his first outing in international cricket. He spoke about how he was padded up for over four hours, as Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma piled up runs on the English bowlers. When he finally got in to bat, he requested Jadeja to keep talking to him, as it keeps him engaged. On his run out, he wasn’t too angry, admitting it was a part of the game.
Sometimes there can be a bit of miscommunication - it's part of the game. Sometimes you get run-out, sometimes you don't - these things keep happening.Sarfaraz Khan on his run-out
On day three, India lost night watchman Kuldeep Yadav and centurion Jadeja within the first five overs. Ravichandran Ashwin and debutant Dhruv Jurel are in the middle, with India having 373/7 on the board after 108 overs. India has also been penalized five runs as Ashwin ran past the five meter mark of the pitch.
