That the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) would ever lift the trophy seemed unthinkable, even for die-hard RCB fans. Being one of the most fervent fans, they were dreaming of seeing the team lift the title for the first time.
Alas! RCB had the opportunity to make their dream come true when they advanced to the final by beating Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians (MI) in the eliminator. In the summit clash, Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals (DC) was ready to face Smriti Mandhana and Co. Lanning guided her team to the Women’s Premier League (WPL) for the second consecutive time. They lost to MI in the previous season.
At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday (March 17), Lanning won the toss and chose to bat first which backfired. All they could post was a paltry 113 runs in 18.3 overs, all thanks to RCB’s Shreyanka Patil’s four-wicket haul. The highest run-scorer for the Capitals was Shafali Verma who scored 44 runs from 27 balls.
Lanning, the ex-Australian captain who led her team to multiple World Cup titles, didn’t want to lose back-to-back WPL finals. But now, she will have to wait for another WPL season to lead her team to glory.
Despite a slow start like that of the DC, Ellyse Perry and Richa Ghosh kept fighting till the end to guide RCB to an eight-wicket victory after scoring 115/2. RCB are now the WPL champions!
Netizens react as RCB finally wins a trophy
The IPL started back in 2008 but the RCB, despite having superstars from around the world, never could hold the coveted cup. After the victory, RCB fans are over the moon. Some said that so what the men’s team couldn’t win, they are extremely proud of the women’s team for ensuring RCB don’t always end up on the losing side in the final.
Check out their reactions here:
Ellyse Perry was the high-scorer for the RCB, scoring an unbeaten 35 runs from 37 balls with four boundaries. Sophie Devine scored 32 off 27, captain Smriti Mandhana played 39 balls to score 31 runs, while Richa Ghosh hit 17 from 14 balls.
