Since the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have failed to win the tournament. Their best chance came in 2009, 2011 and, 2016, where they finished as runners-up. In 16 attempts, they failed to win the IPL title even once. They don’t have a single trophy to their name.
While the men’s team have never been crowned champions, their women’s team took only two seasons to win a trophy. The Smriti Mandhana-led team beat Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium to be crowned the 2nd WPL champions.
Electing to bat first, DC were cruising with Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma putting up a 64-run partnership. What then followed was a catastrophic batting collapse as Sophie Molineux, Shreyanka Patil and Asha Shobana ran through the DC batting order. The RCB batters took their time, chasing down 114 with three balls to spare, winning in their 2nd attempt.
Many RCB players, past and present, took to social media to congratulate the women winning the finals. These included Chris Gayle, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers, Yuzvendra Chahal and many more.

Virat Kohli video calls RCB after historic win
Moments after RCB beat DC in the WPL final, the women’s team celebrated their win on the ground. While celebrating, a support staff of the RCB team came out and approached captain Smriti Mandhana.
When he showed her the screen, it showed Virat Kohli on a video call. He chatted with Mandhana and soon the phone was passed around, as the former India and RCB captain congratulated the RCB women for their victory.
Kohli will soon play for RCB in the 2024 IPL, with RCB playing the opener against Chennai Super Kings. The match will be played at the Chepauk Stadium, Chennai.
