On 30th December 2022, Rishabh Pant was involved in a near-fatal car accident. It left him with injuries to his back, ankle, knee and face, which meant he was out for 16 months. He has undergone many surgeries and months of rehab, he will return to the 2024 IPL to captain the Delhi Capitals.
Recently appointed as the new head coach of Washington Freedom, Ricky Ponting met up with the press and spoke about Pant. He said the 26-year-old is extremely confident ahead of the tournament, saying that he would probably be keeping, captaining and batting at number 4.
Rishabh is very confident that he's going to be right to play. In what capacity we're not quite sure yet. I'll guarantee if I asked him now he'll say, 'I'm playing every game, I'm keeping every game and I'm batting at No.4.' That's just what he's like, but we'll keep our fingers crossed.Ricky Ponting said
Ponting said the DC missed Pant in the previous season and were excited for his return. He confirmed that he wasn’t sure if Pant would be able to keep the wickets for the season, but will play the majority of the matches in some capacity.
David Warner to captain if Rishabh Pant is unavailable
Ricky Ponting confirmed that David Warner would once again return as captain of Delhi Capital only if Rishabh Pant was not available. Despite his probable return, he has not yet confirmed if he’s fully fit to play an entire match.
Talking about the team composition, Ponting said he’s happy with purchases of Harry Brook and Jhye Richardson.
Ponting believes Brook will be perfect as a finisher for the team, unlike Sunrisers Hyderabad who used him as an opener.
