Former Australia captain hailed the cricket fraternity’s reaction to Pat Cummins who went back to Australia due to his mother’s illness. Ponting especially reacted to the strong gesture from England’s famous support group, the Barmy Army, to Cummins and his family, calling that tribute an ‘awesome’ example of how empathetic the cricket community could be.

Cummins flew back to Australia right after the conclusion of the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Delhi. His mother, Maria, is in palliative care, and Cummins decided to be at his mother’s side, he missed the third Test in Indore as well, which saw Steve Smith captaining the side for the third time since Cummins’ handling of the leadership role. Cummins’ participation in the fourth Test in Ahmedabad is uncertain.

Ponting recently spoke about his being in contact with Cummins and that he understands why Cummins decided to go back home. He then praised the cricket fraternity for their support to the 29-year-old and his family in times of difficulty.

I think we’ve seen as well just how small and how tight the cricket world can be,” Ponting told Sanjana Ganesanin in the latest episode of The ICC Review. “I’m sure that he would’ve received a lot of well-wishes from all parts of the world, the cricket-loving fraternity, that would’ve sent some messages of support to him and the rest of his family in obviously what is a really difficult time for them.”

Australia’s arch-rival England’s famous support group, the Barmy Army, travels the world with the national team. Among the many wishes Cummins received, the Barmy Army shared a video of their trumpet player playing ‘Maria’ from the movie West Side Story as a tribute to Cummins’ mother Maria during England’s Test against New Zealand in Wellington.

So that was a fantastic gesture from everyone concerned and involved with the Barmy Army. It was awesome,” Ponting added and then highlighted how small, tight, and close the cricket fraternity is. Ponting went on to praise the lighthearted banter from the Barmy Army when during his Ashes days and called it the best group of sporting fans.
