Former India pacer Ashish Nehra doesn’t think Rinku Singh will get himself a spot in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup next year. The Gujarat Titans (GT) head coach thinks due to tight competition, the World Cup spot is still far away from Singh.
Singh got dismissed just one time in four matches of the ongoing five-match T20I series against Australia. He started by scoring 22* in the first T20I, followed by 31*, and 46.
During a discussion at JioCinema, Nehra expressed his displeasure over another approaching World Cup. He said when everyone is discussing who will be the captain, the players are a distant thing.
Nehra then said that Singh would have a very close fight with keeper Jitesh Sharma and Tilak Varma. The cricketer-turned-commentator also thinks it’s tough to bench Singh, but asserted again that the youngster needs to display his skills during the South Africa tour and in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The World Cup has come again. I am very unhappy with this World Cup. Just now the World Cup has been over, and another World Cup has come.Nehra said on JioCinema.
He added:
Yes, there is no doubt that Rinku Singh is a contender, and he showed it once again, but the World Cup is far away and when you think about that spot, there will be a very close fight.
Rinku Singh attributes his composure during pressurized situations to the IPL
In this year’s IPL, Rinku Singh, while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), had smashed five sixes in the last over to snatch victory from the GT. That was not the end of it, for he continued to display his prowess in the next matches and now in international matches.
After his 46-run knock in the fourth T20I against Australia, Singh attributed his composure in a pressurized situation to the IPL. While speaking to Jitesh Sharma in a video posted by BCCI, Singh said he likes lifting weights, which gives him power, and he thanked his 5–6 years of experience in IPL which is giving him confidence in international matches.
