Rishabh Pant likely to be rested; Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan to get nod for T20Is against Sri Lanka

Team India concluded the 2022 year with a thumping 2-0 in the Test series against Bangladesh. They will be back in action next year when they host Sri Lanka for three T20Is and as many ODIs. As the BCCI is yet to announce the squads, numerous reports have been surfacing regarding the selection of players.

As per the latest report published on InsideSport, wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant is likely to be rested for the T20I series. He has been a constant member of the side across all formats. Hence, to manage his workload and also try other similar players, he is likely to be given rest in the shortest format of the game.

“Rishabh has done well in Tests and he is not out of form. But yes he has not got many runs in T20s. He will be back in the ODI series. He is crucial for us in the Australia series. In T20s, we have quite a few options including Ishan and Sanju who are getting runs in domestic,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan to get spots

Since Rishabh Pant is unlikely to be available, Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson will get spots in the squad. While Kishan recently shocked the cricketing world by scoring a double century in ODI, Samson has impressive numbers in the concerned format. It will be interesting to see how they will be used in the series.

Apart from Pant, captain Rohit Sharma’s availability is in jeopardy. He suffered a thumb injury in the ODI series against Bangladesh and as a result, couldn’t participate in the Test series that followed. Although he returned to the nets to practice on Monday (December 26), it’s still unclear whether he will be fit to play in the T20I series or not.

The T20I series might also see the return of Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah, who have been out of action for a long time due to injuries. While the T20I series will kick-off on January 3 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, the ODI series will commence on January 10 at Barsapara Stadium.
