Curiosity and speculation have been sparked in the world of Indian cricket due to the absence of two highly skilled batsmen, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, from T20 International matches. Surprisingly, neither player has taken part in any T20 matches for India this year. Instead, the leadership role in the shortest format has been handed over to Hardik Pandya. Additionally, other experienced players such as Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami have also been ruled out from participating.
Rohit Sharma recently addressed the absence of certain players in a recent interview. He drew a parallel to last year’s decision to boycott ODI matches due to the T20 World Cup. “You can’t participate in every event and be fully prepared for the World Cup. This was a decision we made two years ago“, emphasized Rohit. He openly acknowledged that this strategy wasn’t limited to him and Virat Kohli, as Ravindra Jadeja, an important player, had also been left out of T20 matches.
The composition of the team has been altered by selectors in anticipation of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies, with a newfound inclination towards younger players. Concerns have been raised by supporters following recent T20I defeats to the West Indies, who also question why veteran players have been withdrawn from consideration.
Rohit Sharma shares selectors’ thoughts on workload management during the World Cup. The crowded schedule and the need for players to focus on the format of the game are the reasons for his choice. “I definitely fall into that category too“, Rohit explained his situation. This shows the careful preparation and strategy behind the player selection(via NDTV news).

Will Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play in the 2024 T20 World Cup?

With much anticipation, the Asia Cup is set to kick off next month, offering valuable preparation for the Indian squad ahead of the long-awaited World Cup, which has eluded them for over a decade. The impending ODI World Cup will bring a shift in focus, as all eyes turn curiously to Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s return to the T20I scene. Interestingly, Rohit Sharma eagerly anticipates his performance in the T20 World Cup of 2024.
India are set to play a T20I series against Ireland before the World Cup ends. As of now, the West Indies tour was run by the Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, while the Ireland tour will be run by Jasprit Bumrah, who was recently seen practicing in the nets after his recovery.
Although the 2024 T20 World Cup is too far, the murmurs of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma playing in the tournament have already started. It is to be seen if the BCCI Selection Committee comes back to the veterans or back the young guns to do the job in the Caribbean and the USA.
