World’s No.1 T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav has been unable to translate his form in the other two formats of the game. While Yadav has not gotten enough chances in Test cricket, the batter has been a consistent failure in ODIs. In 26 ODIs played so far, Yadav has managed 474 runs at an average of 23.80.
In the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies, Yadav has managed 43 runs across two matches while batting at No.3 and No.6. While he has been used as a floater in this series, Yadav has batted at No.4 and No.5 in his short ODI career so far. But Suryakumar has just failed to catch up.
These failures have drew flak for Surya from all corners but the Indian team management is not ready to give up on Yadav yet. As per reports, Team India captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid want to try Surya in a different role.
Suryakumar Yadav to be given T20-like role in ODIs
AS Suryakumar Yadav averages a mere 6 while batting at No.4, the team management wants to push him down the order and give him T20-like conditions in ODIs. As per a report in The Indian Express, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, the captain, and the coach don’t want to waste Surya’s batting abilities and hence want him to provide the role where he can flourish.
The report claimed that this decision is inspired by Surya’s phenomenal numbers in T20 cricket and India missing two of its key batters, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer. Notably, while Japsirt Bumrah is all set to return to action through the Ireland series, there is no update on Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul’s comeback.
“An in-form Suryakumar can change the course of the game and all of his match-winning knocks have come in the shortest format…Having him lower down the order, the think tank believes, will strengthen the Indian batting line-up,” the report claimed.
