On the eve of the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka on Monday (January 7), India skipper Rohit Sharma said he has no plans to retire from T20Is. He, along with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, were not part of the T20I squad that played the recently-concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka. Hardik Pandya led the team to a 2-1 series win.

The all-format players have been given breaks because of a hectic schedule, and Rohit Sharma is one of them. His form has slumped a bit as runs are not coming from his bat consistently. So, discussions are going on if Rohit will soon retire from T20Is and a young team under Pandya will be going to the West Indies and USA for the 2024 T20 World Cup. But Rohit broke the silence on his T20I career and said he has no plans to give up playing the shortest format.

Firstly, it is not possible to play back-to-back matches. You need to give them (all format players) enough break. I definitely fall in that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after the IPL. I have not decided to give up the format,” Rohit said.

At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it’s a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys it’s not possible to play all formats,” the 36-year-old replied to a query from PTI.

In that same presser, Rohit Sharma revealed who will be his opening partner between Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Rohit confirmed that he’ll open with Gill.

I think it is fair that we give Gill a chance to have a fair run because, in the last games, Gill got a lot of runs as well,” Rohit said. He then praised Kishan for his exploits against Bangladesh when he slammed his maiden double century in ODIs.

India will play three ODIs against Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka, starting on Tuesday (January 10) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The second ODI will be played on January 12, while the third will be on 15th January.
