India captain Rohit Sharma has a difficult task ahead of him in the upcoming months. When he was dropped from India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad, sadness had befallen him, but little did he know that in 2023, he would shoulder the captaincy duties in the ODI World Cup.

This means, Rohit, who was left behind in 2011, will be taking decisions on squad selections and deciding which players won’t fit in the 15-member squad. In 2011, MS Dhoni and management did not include Rohit to squeeze an extra wrist spinner (Piyush Chawla) in the squad.

Recalling the snub, a deeply hurt Rohit received some valuable advice from former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh.”I was sad and sitting in my room and didn’t know what to do next. I remember Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) calling me to his room and taking me out for dinner,” Rohit told PTI.

He explained to me how it feels when you are left out,” Rohit added. He revealed Yuvraj’s words who told him to remain positive and think of how many years he has ahead of him, asking him to work hard and make a comeback.

Rohit further said that he worked hard on his skills and since then, things have worked out well for him and he even emerged as the highest-run scorer in the tournament in 2019 with 648 runs from nine matches, including five unprecedented centuries, with the highest being a 140-run knock.

Now that Rohit Sharma has the captaincy responsibilities, he will have to judge who he and the management think will fit in the squad as per the conditions and team combination. Rohit said that his decisions will not be based on his personal likes and dislikes and that there will be a reason why that player will miss out.

I have faced exclusion in a World Cup, and I know how it exactly feels,” Rohit added. But he accepted that as an individual, he and the management are bound to make wrong decisions, which is why he needs to keep an open mind and process others’ suggestions.

India will start their 2023 Asia Cup campaign on September 2 against Pakistan. The ODI World Cup will be played in India this year from October 5, with a match between last edition’s finalists England and New Zealand. Rohit Sharma and Co. will play their first match against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.
