In a shocking development in the camp of the Mumbai Indians (MI), Hardik Pandya was appointed as captain of the franchise for the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pandya took the captaincy duty from Rohit Sharma who has led the franchise for 10 years, since IPL 2013.
Before this announcement, Pandya returned to MI in an all-cash trade with Gujarat Titans (GT). GT made Pandya their captain in their first appearance in the IPL in 2022 and the all-rounder led the side to glory by beating Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the final. In the next season, GT again made it to the final of the league but lost to five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
It is a part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership, right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who contributed to the immense success and strengthened the team for the future.Mahela Jayawardene, Global Head of Performance, said in a release
He added:
It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season.
Jayawardene further expressed his gratitude to Rohit, under whom MI tasted success as they won five trophies in the cash-rich league.
