You got to turn on the stove and let the flame burn. On Saturday afternoon, Rohit Sharma was the master chef in charge. And the ingredients he used to roast Pakistan in the ICC World Cup mother of all contests were a sharp brain, brilliant strategy, and using the bowlers in bursts.
As Pakistan stepped off the turf at the Narendra Modi stadium, heads hanging in shame, Rohit was the man who plotted the doom for Pakistan. From winning the toss to opting to bowl first, Rohit was clear in his heart and head. He was dead sure what he was going to implement.
His body language these days is awesome. There is a calmness in it as well as a purpose in it. For a man who is perhaps playing his last World Cup for India, his ability to strategize and execute catches the eye. At one stage, Pakistan looked well set, with Babar Azam and Rizwan cruising. The crowds were screaming, all blue. Rohit and the men were calm, dealing with Pakistan so coolly.
This kind of calmness was what was needed in a contest where the stakes were high. India versus Pakistan has been the biggest battle, yet the captain was in no mood to change the tadka (flavor). This was Indian curry, roast the Pakis, and rub them on the turf in what was once known as Motera in Ahmedabad.
In a white ball game, it is the batter who grabs headlines. No, Saturday belonged to Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja. It looked scary when Rohit included Shubman Gill in the playing XI. Would he be fit after the dengue bout? Well, the captain knew how to inflict psychological pressure which was to include Gill and also make his field.
The hit-man show: India vs. Pakistan World Cup 2023
Three wins in a row for India in the World Cup, Rohit and the men look so composed. There is a method, a strategy, and a soothing way they are playing. Home pressure is intense, yet the Indian team is handling it well.
Over one lakh screaming for India in the heat of Ahmedabad was a scary Saturday. Yet, Rohit and the entire team were in sync, bowling, fielding, and doing well to take the DRS smartly. Perhaps, this is where being in control stands out in a match where the razor-sharp edge was missing.
Team India had been hyped from the beginning. Undoubtedly, there was maximum stress on the Indians since the nation wanted the World Cup, last won in 2011. Home advantage, knowing conditions, being on top, all these are pet phrases. For the bowling to function lik a unit and blow away Pakistan was a brilliant afternoon.
As for Rohit the batter, he was ruthless, once again. Using his bat like a bludgeon, the Indian captain scored 86 off 63 balls. In the process, he also scored 300 sixes in the World Cup, a feat that stood out.
Fans went hoarse screaming, this is Navratra celebrations already on. From “garbha” dance to rock and roll, the Team Indian win in Ahmedabad has brought us joy. A hat-trick of wins, this was not expected. Are experts going to say the team has peaked too early?
Just chill, and celebrate. India finished Pakistan in a woefully one-sided cricket contest. Again.
