26-year-old Ruturaj Gaikwad has captained on various occasions for Maharashtra. But his biggest challenge will come in the 2022 Asian Games being held in Hangzhou, China. It is the first time India will participate in cricket at the Asian Games.
Ruturaj has captained the Maharashtra state team in the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He later captained Puneri Bappa in the Maharashtra Premier League. He led the Maharashtra team to the finals of the VHT in 2022, losing to Saurashtra in the finals.
A total of 18 teams will participate in the Asian Games for Men’s Cricket. Some of them include defending champions Sri Lanka, hosts China, and various teams such as Pakistan, Hong Kong, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, etc. The Men’s cricket competition starts from 28th September, with the finals being held on 7th October.

In the 2nd T20I against Ireland Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 58 of 43 balls. While talking in the post match presentation after the 2nd T20I against Ireland, Gaikwad revealed the advice MS Dhoni had given him on captaincy. Gaikwad thinks that leadership roles are pretty complicated. He further added “What Mahi bhai always says is to take it one game at a time. Just be in the present moment, don’t worry about the future. Everyone creates hype and whatever it is”.
Ruturaj said he’s not the kind of person to let social media affect him and says it’s a trait he’s learnt from his time with CSK. He says his captaincy style is making sure he gives full confidence and backing to all 10 players. He says if each bowler or batsman has their own plan, he’ll back them and be in their shoes to try to understand their perspective.
“For me in the game particularly, it is more about giving freedom to the players. Make sure they back themselves first. Too many suggestions also create confusion; this is what I believe,” said Gaikwad.
