Sanju Samson fined for breaching IPL code of conduct

Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain, Sanju Samson was fines INR 12 lakhs for breaching an IPL Code of Conduct. As Rajasthan Royals failed to complete their quota of 20 overs in the allotted time, captain Samson was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate and hence was fined. Notably, a team is expected to finish their quota of 20 overs in a stipulated time period of 90 minutes in an uninterrupted game.

The other team to have faced a penalty for maintaining a slow over rate in IPL 2023 so far is Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Faf du Plessis was fined INR 12 lakhs for maintaining a slow over-rate during a match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

“Rajasthan Royals have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 17 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Thursday.

“As it was the team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, captain Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” it added.

It’s worth mentioning that, if these two captains (Samson and du Plessis) breach the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences again this season, they will be fined INR 24 lakhs. Meanwhile, their teammates will be liable to pay INR 6 lakh or 25% of the match fee, whichever is lower. On the third such instance, the captain will have to pay INR 30 lakh as a fine and face a one-match ban.

The remaining 10 players, meanwhile, will be fined INR 12 lakh or 50% of the match fee, whichever is lower.

RR win

Coming to the result of the match played between CSK and RR, the Sanju Samson-led team beat the four-time champions by three runs at their own den. Rajasthan scripted history with this win as they become the first team (other than Mumbai Indians) to beat CSK at Chepauk in the last ten years. Also, it was RR’s first win against CSK at Chepauk after 2008.
