“And people call him selfish?”- Sanju Samson’s 86* goes in vain as India loses to South Africa by 9 runs in the 1st ODI

After a gap, Sanju Samson got the chance to represent the Men in Blue against South Africa in the first ODI on October 6 at the Ekana Sports City. But his knock of 86* had gone in vain as the Proteas clinched the match by nine runs.
South Africa was asked to bat first and with a flying start, Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock stitched a 49-run stand for the first wicket before Shardul Thakur dismissed the former on 22 runs. This happened in the 13th over. Thakur bowled a full one on the pads and Malan looked to work it through the square leg but went uppishly towards mid-wicket. Shreyas Iyer leapt and grabbed it.
De Kock played a 54-ball 48-run knock but Ravi Bishnoi trapped him with lbw in the 23rd over. Bishnoi bowled in line with the stumps and de Kock looked to reverse sweep it but missed it and got pinged on the pads. The appeal was made and the umpire raised his finger. De Kock took the review; the third umpire’s review clearly showed three reds and so the batter had to walk back to the dressing room.
South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma could add only eight runs, while Aiden Markram was bowled by Kuldeep Yadav on duck in the 16th over. Heinrich Klaasen scored an unbeaten 74 runs off 65 balls with six fours and two sixes, while David Miller played a 65-ball 75-run knock studded in five fours and three sixes to take the Proteas to 249/4 in 40 overs (rain delayed the match, so overs were reduced to 40 overs).
The regular squad led by Rohit Sharma were not playing and instead, Shikhar Dhawan was captaining the team. He and Shubman Gill opened the innings but soon they walked back to the dugout. Shreyas Iyer played a half-century knock of 50 runs off 37 balls with eight fours to get dismissed by Lungi Ngidi in the 27th over.
Shardul Thakur scored 33 runs off 31 balls with five fours before Ngidi trapped him too. Sanju Samson was the star for India but despite his unbeaten 86 runs off 63 balls (including nine fours and three sixes), India failed to score the remaining nine runs.
