The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) under Gautam Gambhir‘s leadership won two trophies in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2012 and 2014. After mentoring Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two seasons, Gambhir will return to his old franchise.

On Wednesday (November 22), KKR released a statement saying Gambhir will join the side as the team’s mentor in IPL 2024. A fan on X asked KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan about Gambhir’s return to the franchise.

Gautam Gambhir reacts after joining KKR

Gautam Gambhir captained KKR from 2011 to 2017 before parting ways. LSG under his mentorship reached the playoffs in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The Lucknow-based franchise has signed in Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning captain Justin Langer as their head coach. After this new development, Gambhir expressed how emotional he was after joining his old franchise.

I am not an emotional person and not many things move me. But this is different. This is back to where it all started. Today, there is a lump in my throat and fire in my heart as I think about slipping into that purple and gold jersey once again.
Gambhir was quoted as saying in a press note released by KKR.

The news came after Gambhir had a meeting with Shah Rukh Khan at the latter’s house. Though there was considerable buzz surrounding Gambhir’s possible return to KKR, they did not reveal anything back then.
