Though there is no official information to confirm this, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) co-owner and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan reportedly offered a blank cheque to Gautam Gambhir to make him join the team. Gambhir will be mentoring the side in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).
Gambhir used to lead KKR and under him, the Kolkata-based team won the trophy two times – in 2012 and 2014. After playing for KKR from 2011 to 2017, the Delhi-born then joined Delhi Capitals (DC).
In 2022, he made a comeback to the IPL after his retirement, joining the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their mentor. The team reached the playoffs that year and in 2023 as well.
KKR last advanced to the final in 2021, losing to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). They failed to make it to the playoffs in the last two years and so Shah Rukh Khan decided to bring Gambhir back to his old franchise. But, as it was reported by several publications, Gambhir received a blank cheque from King Khan. Gambhir has not yet stated anything regarding the same.
Gautam Gambhir delivers motivational speech after joining KKR
Gautam Gambhir has often criticized the Indian fraternity for hero worship. Upon joining KKR, Gambhir delivered an inspirational speech in which he talked about treating everyone equally. He told them that the one mission that should be on everyone’s mind is to take KKR to the IPL trophy for the third time.
In this group, everyone will be treated equally. There is no senior or junior, no domestic or international divide because our sole mission is to clinch the IPL trophy. Everyone needs to adhere to this singular objective.Gambhir said in a video released by KKR
Gambhir is also KKR’s highest run-scorer with 3300-plus runs from 120-plus matches. He made his debut for the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the inaugural edition in 2008.
