Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was appointed as Bangladesh’s new ODI captain on Friday (11 August). As the seat was vacant after Tamim Iqbal stepped down from the position a few days back, Hasan has come on board as the new skipper. He will now lead the Tiers at the 2023 Asia Cup and 2023 ODI World Cup.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hasan who was given the job to persuade Shakib for the job confirmed the appointment on Friday.

“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members,” Nazmul Hasan told reporters on Friday (via Cricbuzz).

This will be Shakib’s second term as ODI skipper as the all-rounder has already led Bangladesh in 49 ODIs between 2009 and 2011. Hasan is also the T20I and Test captain of the Bangladesh cricket team. However, a decision on the same will be taken when the all-rounder returns from the Lanka Premier League.

“We will speak more to him when he returns to Bangladesh [from Lanka Premier League]. We have to know his long-term plan. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday. But it is better if we talk to him in person since he is busy with a franchise league currently. We will also talk about which format he will keep leading, whether it is all three formats or one or two of them,” Nazmul Hasan further stated.

Notably, Litton Das is touted to take over Test captaincy while white-ball captaincy will stay with Shakib Al Hasan. The announcement about the same will be made in due course.
