On 12th September, India faced Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. They were playing their Super 4 fixture of the 2023 Asia Cup. After India elected to bat first, they started strong, playing the pacers without any issues. But after the spinners were introduced, the Indian batsmen struggled. From 80-0, India finished the innings with 213 runs, with all spinners picking up wickets.
Looking at India’s performance, Pakistani fans believed India were losing purposely to ensure Pakistan were knocked out of the Asia Cup. These fans also called up and messaged Shoaib Akhtar claiming the same.
Akhtar on his Youtube channel said “What you guys are doing. I am getting memes and messages saying ‘India have fixed the game’, that they are losing deliberately in order to eliminate Pakistan. Are your heads alright? They (Sri Lanka) are bowling their heart out. Dunith Wellalage and Asalanka bowled their heart out. Did you see that 20-year-old kid? He scored 43 runs and took 5 wickets. I am getting phone calls from India and other countries, saying India was losing deliberately.”
Akhtar countered their claims by asking why India would deliberately lose when they have a direct path to the finals. He then requested everyone to stop making such claims and memes. The Rawalpindi Express then praised India for their comeback and said that the Indian team’s mentality must be commended. He also praised Kuldeep Yadav for his amazing spell that won India the match.
Charith Senanyake says the Asia Cup was fixed
Former Sri Lankan cricketer, Charith Senanyake, slammed the Asian Cricket Council for allowing a reserve day between India and Pakistan and chasing money. He was unhappy after rules were changed only for India and Pakistan while not for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
He further said the entire competition was rigged so that the ACC could have a final between India and Pakistan. He said the ACC is only chasing money and drew the groups in such a way that India and Pakistan could play each other as much as possible.
