India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been out of cricket action since the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia in Ahmedabad in March this year. He had back trouble for a while and he was trying to manage it without undergoing surgery.
But the pain exacerbated during the Test series, and from then onwards, it was impossible for him to make a comeback. Iyer underwent surgery in London this April and after three weeks, he joined the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for rehabilitation.
“I had this issue for a while, but I was taking injections,” Iyer told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) website. “To be precise, I had this nerve compression, basically a slipped disc that was compressing the nerve and the pain was going all the way to the bottom of my tiny toe. It was horrendous, to be honest.”
Iyer added that it was horrible at first because the pain was not subsiding but slowly, he started gaining strength and with the help of his close ones, who calmed him from panicking, and being patient, he is all ready for a comeback. The Mumbai-born batter claimed that at the moment, he is happy to be where he is because never imagined recovering faster.
Will Shreyas Iyer take care of India’s No.4 conundrum?
The BCCI announced a 17-member squad for the 2023 Asia Cup. The 26-year-old, along with other members, is currently in Alur, Karnataka for a six-day conditioning camp for the continental tournament. He might make a comeback to competitive cricket in the Asia Cup and will have to take care of India’s No.4 conundrum.
If all goes well, then he will also find a place in the squad for the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India this year. The Asia Cup will start on August 30, and India will commence their campaign on September 2 with a match between arch-rivals Pakistan.
