India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss the three-match ODI series against Australia which is scheduled to start just a few days after the conclusion of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
Iyer did not come out to bat on Saturday at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad after he complained of pain in his back. In his place Ravindra Jadeja was sent at No.5. At first, everyone thought that India captain Rohit Sharma wanted to have a left-right combination which is why he sent Jadeja to bat alongside Virat Kohli. And on Sunday morning, after Jadeja’s dismissal, KS Bharat walked in instead of Iyer. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) then issued a statement regarding Iyer’s condition and that he had gone for the scans.
“Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” the BCCI statement read.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, Iyer’s scan results are not encouraging and he will have to be shown to a specialist and will also need to undergo further tests. The report further said that the national selectors have been informed of Iyer’s problem, and they will take a call on whether to retain him for the ODI series or not or find a better replacement. The national selectors will take the decision after the conclusion of the fourth Test on Monday.
Shreyas Iyer’s participation in IPL hangs in the air
The report by Cricbuzz also claimed that Shreyas Iyer’s recurring back pain is so severe that his chances to participate in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) are hanging in the air. Iyer captains the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders.
The 29-year-old was not seen in the dressing room during the fourth day’s play because he was having his scans done. He felt this pain after the Sri Lanka white-ball series in January, after which he missed the white-ball series against New Zealand. The pain also kept him out of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur.
Though Iyer couldn’t assist the Indian batters, his absence was not felt much because of Virat Kohli who slammed his 28th Test century. The current fourth Test is heading toward a draw, meaning, India will become the second finalist in the ICC World Test Championship Final after Australia.
