India batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which is set to start on Wednesday (January 18). Rajat Patidar has been named as his replacement.

As per ESPN’s report, Iyer dealt with a stiff back after the final ODI against Sri Lanka. So, he was advised by medical staff to go to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

He reached NCA on Monday but is set to rejoin the national squad in Nagpur for a preparatory camp before the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Iyer has been part of the Test series against Australia, which is scheduled to start on February 9 at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.

Iyer is the second leading run-scorer for India after Shubman Gill since 2022. He has scored 818 runs at an average of 51.12 and a strike rate of 92.95. In the three-match ODI series victory against Sri Lanka, the 28-year-old scored 28, 28, and 30.

Meanwhile, Rajat Patidar hogged the limelight by slamming a ton for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. In eight innings of RCB, he played at a strike rate of 152.75, scoring 333 runs.

He represents Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket. In last year’s tournament, his team created history by beating the 41-time champions Mumbai by six wickets in the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy final to lift the cup for the first time (as Madhya Pradesh). In the final match, Patidar scored 122 and 30* in the first and second innings.
