Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer was spotted in the Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore supporting India’s football team. Notably, India locked horns against Lebanon in the semi-final of the SAFF Championship 2023. The tournament kicked off on 21st June 2023 with India taking on Pakistan where they beat their rivals 4-0.
Shreyas Iyer’s back injury has kept him out from cricket since March and he is still recovering from the same. The swashbuckling batter last played for India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023 against Australia. Iyer missed IPL 2023 as well and is currently at the NCA, going through his recovery process. While already in Bangalore, Shreyas Iyer paid a visit to the stadium to cheer for the Indian football team.
Shreyas Iyer was seen seated behind the Indian Football coach, the Croatian, Igor Stimac who was in the stands after he recieved a red card from India’s clash against Kuwait. Like Iyer, another Indian cricketer, Yashasvi Jaiswal was also spotted cheering for India in earlier games.
Could Shreyas Iyer return for the ODI World Cup?
While the post-surgery recovery process is on, reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer might not recover in time for the Asia Cup and as well as the ODI World Cup moving ahead. A BCCI official shared, “Iyer’s progress is slow, but we are hoping that he recovers in time for the World Cup. At the present moment, it is not a certainty with Iyer.”
The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Rishab Pant have also missed out on a lot of cricket due to injury and are all currently recovering. While Bumrah and KL are likely to return soon, Shreyas Iyer’s return remains uncertain and due to the gravity of Rishab Pant’s injuries, he is almost out of the picture.
